Description

The debut short story collection from the acclaimed author of The Chalk Man, hailed as “Britain’s female Stephen King” (Daily Mail), featuring eleven bone-chilling and mind-bending tales.Time slips. Doomsday scenarios. Killer butterflies. C. J. Tudor’s novels are widely acclaimed for their dark, twisty suspense plots, but with A Sliver of Darkness, she pulls us even further into her dizzying imagination. In “The Lion at the Gate,” a strange piece of graffiti leads to a terrifying encounter for four school friends. In “Final Course,” the world has descended into darkness, but a group of old friends makes time for one last dinner party. In “Runaway Blues,” thwarted love, revenge, and something very nasty stowed in a hat box converge. In “Gloria,” a strange girl at a service station endears herself to a coldhearted killer, but can a leopard really change its spots? And in “I’m Not Ted,” a case of mistaken identity has unforeseen fatal consequences.Riveting, macabre, and explosively original, A Sliver of Darkness is C. J. Tudor at her most wicked and uninhibited.

About The Author

C. J. TUDOR is the author of The Burning Girls, The Other People, The Hiding Place and The Chalk Man, which won the International Thriller Writers Award for Best First Novel, the Barry Award and the Strand Magazine Award for Best Debut Novel. Over the years she has worked as a copywriter, television presenter, voice-over artist and dog walker. She is now thrilled to be able to write full-time, and doesn't miss chasing wet dogs through muddy fields all that much. She lives in England with her partner and daughter.

"This unsettling collection of stories from a writer often called the 'British Stephen King' deftly inverts the banal and unremarkable to reveal their underlying horror." —Metro UK"Eleven tales that . . . definitely tread familiar King territory. . . . Each story has a satisfying conclusion and a bit of a twist—and there's a personal introduction from the author to each, which is a nice touch." —The Independent"How vanishingly thin is the line between mystery and horror, as C. J. Tudor so expertly proves in this absorbing collection. . . . A Sliver of Darkness is a neat sampler of weird and thrilling fiction, with the supernatural rubbing shoulders with more straightforward crime. . . . Each of the ten stories comes with a brief but lively introduction by Tudor, discussing the inspiration behind the tale it leads into. The introductions are a fascinating window into the thought processes of a working author, and greatly enrich the reading experience. If you're a fan of her work, this book is a can't-miss. If you're new to her oeuvre, as I was before reading this collection, then this is a terrific gateway to her other novels." —Criminal Element "C. J. Tudor takes us on a journey into her dark world—a journey that readers will very much enjoy! . . . A fantastic collection to read if you love horror or want to dip your toes into the genre." —The Nerd Daily "Tudor is not referred to as the British Stephen King by accident. All of these tales are quite dark. Many feature ironic twists that remind me of King's short story work, specifically Night Shift, with a smattering of The Twilight Zone thrown in for good measure. . . . A Sliver of Darkness is a creepy good time and far different from C. J. Tudor's usual bill of fare. It is a bold departure that also shows her full breadth of talent and may suggest that there could be some darker, long-form fiction from her in the future." —Bookreporter"An imaginative and entertaining collection of short stories. . . . Tudor's introductions to each story and to the collection as a whole are a refreshing window into her life and the genesis of her work." —Library Journal"Tudor provides plenty of subtle chills in this superior collection of eleven stories. . . . Twilight Zone fans will hope for another collection from this gifted writer." —Publishers Weekly"All hail the queen of scream. A Sliver of Darkness is C.J. Tudor at her spine-tingling, nightmare-inducing best. Read it if you dare." —Chris Whitaker, New York Times bestselling author of We Begin at the End"Beautifully barbaric, creepy as hell and crammed with barbed wit, Tudor can say more in one short story than many writers can manage in a full-length novel." —John Mars, internationally bestselling author of The Passengers"Brilliantly creepy and perfectly executed." —James Oswald, author of The Inspector McLean series"A decadent and phantasmagorical descent into the dark chasm where I first fell in love with horror fiction. Told with real heart along with demonic savagery, these are stories to luxuriate with in the tenebrous." —Matt Wesolowski, award-winning author of Six Stories
