Description

Chemo, radiation, a zillion surgeries, watching my mom age twenty years in twenty months: if that’s part of the Big Dude’s plan, then it’s pretty obvious, isn’t it?    Somebody up there hates you.    Smart-mouthed and funny, sometimes raunchy, Richard Casey is in most ways a typical seventeen-year-old. Except Richie has cancer, and he’s spending his final days in a hospice unit. His mother, his doctors, and the hospice staff are determined to keep Richie alive as long as possible. But in this place where people go to die, Richie has his own plans for how to make the most of the life he has left.

“Even in hospice, a lot can happen in a short time… Being near death doesn’t mean abandoning hope for the life that remains.” – Publishers Weekly, starred review“Each character is vividly drawn, with a sharp, memorable voice that readers will love and remember… A fresh, inspiring story.” – Kirkus Reviews, starred review"A valuable story of love, friendship, and determination that will make readers consider all that we take for granted." – Washington Independent Review of Books"I read Somebody Up There Hates You in one great rush. This novel is funny, harrowing, and wildly profane. It had me crying with laughter on one page and then just plain crying on another." – Will Schwalbe, author of The End of Your Life Book Club"Here are some things Hollis Seamon knows: Life, for one, and the end of life, and how they are always partners. She knows what's sad, and she knows what's funny. And she knows what people need, and how it feels to be someone who worries he might not get to experience life fully before he goes. Knowing all that— and being able to write about it so simply, and beautifully, with such a lack of sentimentality—is already enough for one writer. That she is able to take this knowledge and, with it, inhabit a character … is a kind of miracle." – Richard Kramer, author of These Things Happen"Few novels capture the realities of pain and grief with as much humanity as Hollis Seamon's wise, wicked, and hilarious Somebody Up There Hates You. Richie, a.k.a The Incredible Dying Boy, is obnoxious, charming, selfish, generous, and always funny—and he one of the most honest teenage narrators I've read in ages. I'd follow him anywhere." – Bennett Madison, author of September Girls"Heartfelt … The language is raw and even profane at times, but hardly inappropriate given the circumstances … This novel is respectful of its serious subject matter, yet is an entertaining and heartening read." – School Library Journal"Seamon's first young adult novel is tender, insightful, and unsentimental look at two teens in extremis. It brings light to a very dark place, and in so doing, does its reader a generous service." – Booklist"Believable and poignant." – The Bulletin for the Center for Children's Books"[Somebody Up There Hates You] is incredibly riveting and also a celebration of the spirit in each of us … I can't help but think of this book alongside The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. They're … both expertly written, embodying the voices of young adults with no sugar-coating, just clear-eyed honesty. Each book lingers with you for a long, long time." – Everyday E-BooksHollis Seamon has done a magnificent job of portraying these teens in such real light … A great teen read." – Bergers Book Review"Funny and Enlightening." – Rhapsody in Books"Every once in a while a novel comes along that gut-puches you so hard you double over in pain. This is Hollis SEamon's heart-wrenching Somebody Up There Hates You … My heart broke as I read the last words on the last page of this book that tore my heart out, stomped on it, then picked it back up and ripped it to pieces. And it was good. So, so good." – Sassy Peach Reads"Crack open the front cover, turn to the first page, read the opening lines, and if you're like me, you'll be instantly hooked by Richie's smart (and smart-ass) voice." – David Abrams, The Quivering Pen"This is not just another teen-dying-of-cancer story. Seamon has created a smart-mouthed, funny, occasionally raunchy, very typical teen by narrating the final days of his life in a way that is unflinching, graphic, at times funny, and at times heartbreaking … emotions are raw and painful but the story is a powerful and life-affirming look at what it means to grow up and your life is ending." – VOYA"If you life stories about fighting the ultimate battle for life and love, like John Green's The Fault in Our Stars, then you will laugh and cry your way through this one." – Faze Magazine
