Description
The year 2017 marked 100 years since the 1917 Balfour Declaration, 70 years since the 1947 UN resolution for the Partition of Palestine, and 50 years since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. In this context, Darat al Funun – The Khalid Shoman Foundation dedicated its 2017 program of exhibitions and events to showcasing the continuity of pre-1948 Palestinian civilization under the title Falastin al Hadara.
Falastin al Hadara highlights Palestinian civilization and cultural heritage throughout the ages. The publication includes in-depth talks on archaeology and architecture, early printed press and radio, Palestinian poets and writers, photography, and the history of music and popular culture before 1948. Additionally, it serves as an exhibition catalogue for the exhibitions held during the year, where pioneering Palestinian artists from the early 20th century were exhibited alongside contemporary artists. Together, it brings to life the untold story of Palestine.
Publication contributors: Mo’awiyah Ibrahim, Issam Nassar, Nazmi Al Ju’beh, Aida Najjar, Faiha Abdulhadi, Suhail Khoury, Khaldun Bshara, Mohanad Yacoubi and Salim Tamari; and screening of talks by Walid Khalidi and Edward Said; and stories from before by Tamam Al Akhal, Widad Kawar, and Dr. Hisham al Khatib.
